Chromatography At Home

Above is the link to the Youtube video detailing my chromatography experiment. I used the remaining leaves on my basil plant from the "Basil, Basil Everywhere" assignment, cutting them off of the plant, chopping them into smaller pieces, and placing them in a small, clear drinking glass. I filled the glass up about 1/3 of the way with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and allowed that to sit overnight to be sure that it had more than enough time. Then, in the morning, I cut a strip of coffee filter paper about one inch wide and placed the tip in the glass, the edge hanging over the side. I let that sit in the liquid for two hours before removing the strip and observing the results. Overall, I think that I was successful in my chromatography experiment due to the ample amount of time I allowed. I did obtain separate pigment bands, to an extent--as you can see, there is a dark, thick green line and it is very defined. It then fades to yellow and continues to absorb up the filter paper. It would be interesting to see whether the pigments would have crawled even further up the paper had it been given even more time; however, I do not believe they would, because the color does seem to taper off about an inch up the strip.
